Cummins diesel engines and Ram Trucks go together like cookies and milk. So today, the two manufacturers celebrated the production of the two-millionth diesel engine for Ram: a Christmas-red 6.7-liter in-line six turbodiesel for the 2013 Ram 3500.
Following four years of development, Cummins supplied the first batch of 5.9-liter B Series diesel engines for use in the 1989 Dodge Ram. Using a turbocharged inline-six setup, these direct-injected diesels churned out 160 hp with 400 lb-ft of torque. Just shy of a quarter century later, the latest 6.7-liter High Output Cummins turbo diesel more than doubles those figures, putting out 385 hp and 850 lb.-ft of torque.
Tragically, the two millionth engine will never get a chance to flex its muscles. The lucky red turbo diesel will go on a U.S. tour as a display model.
